- Afterimage Creation (Cloaks of Displacement create illusory duplicates all around the subject in the area, making them several times harder to hit)

- Duplication (Shades creates semi-real duplicates of other spells, using the nonexistent shadowstuff of the Plane of Shadow)
- Sense Manipulation (Leomund's Trap alters the perception of those who can sense danger and traps, by forcing them to sense traps and danger everywhere)
- Light Manipulation (Nystul has written and made many spells for controlling light, including Nystul's Dancing Werelight, Nystul's Blazing Beam, and Nystul's Lightburst)
- Darkness Manipulation (He similarly has created countless spells for controlling darkness, the absence of light- these include Nystul's Blackmote, Nystul's Blacklight Burst, and Nystul's Enveloping Darkness)
- Perception Manipulation (Some of his spells, including Nystul's Flash, cause disorientation and confusion in targets who fail to avert their eyes)

- Death Manipulation (Nystul's Blackmote is darkness formed from the death energies of the Negative Energy Plane, which can rend the souls of those it touches)

- Temperature Manipulation (His baton can be cold or heat based, dealing increased damage to enemies of the opposite sort)

- Purification (He can use his baton to neutralize poisons)

- Plant Manipulation (His baton can be made up of violet energy, which kills plants on contact)
- Time Manipulation (Nystul's Blacklight Burst generates a soul-rending explosion that steals the time of the target, slowing them for a short duration)
- Status Effect Inducement (Higher planar creatures are instead stunned by Nystul's Blacklight Burst)
- Summoning (He can summon powerful elemental creatures known as Grue, which assist him in combat)
- Forcefield Creation (He can generate mage armor for himself, which creates a forcefield all around his being that moves with him)
